I’m not entirely sure why this honor was bestowed on Mr. Leno and not Mr. Letterman, but President Obama made history last night and further upped his celebrity cool quotient by being the first active president to appear on a late night talk show when he sat down cross-legged on that big yellow couch on The Tonight Show. Sure, he was cool and calm and witty and all smiles from ear to satellite dish ear. Charm to spare! And Jay seemed rather at ease too as he diligently breezed through the interview questions skillfully prepared by President Obama’s policy advisors. Perhaps that’s why Mr. President chose to talk with Jay and not Dave, who would find the opportunity for true zingers quite irresistible, I’m sure. Nevertheless, it was pleasant interview that covered everything from AIG to the new First Dog. Typical.
But it seems President Obama was a bit too comfortable chewin’ the fat with Jay to remember simple social niceties when he likened his awful bowling skills to that of a Special Olympics participant.
Whoops?
Now, I’m in no way interested in offering my take on this little Obomb. It’s just not my style. But what interests me most and what I couldn’t wait to do when I woke up this morning is to take a good old-fashioned media spin class. Because I want the truth. I want to know what happened and I need to know how much I’m supposed to care.
Let’s take a look at this morning’s headlines, shall we?

Oh. Wow. Okay. So according to MSNBC nothing of note really happened on The Tonight Show. And I guess President Obama will not take this AIG situation lightly. That’s, you know, that’s reassuring. Sure. Surely.

Well, now wait a minute. I thought that everything went just swimmingly last night. Now this tiny ticker is telling me something may have gone a wee bit wrong? Did Captain Cool dance a teensy mistep?

HOLY SHIT! Our President is an insensitive hate-monger! He only wants to buy a puppy for his girls so that he can kick it across the White House lawn when he loses his famous cool! I care so much now! In fact, I’m enraged now! But always, of course, fair and balanced. You know.
No matter your opinion on President Obama’s slip of the sass, I’m sure we can all agree on one thing. Collectively, the media is probably bowling a 102. Go for that gold!
